Course Description

This course will teach students to play handbells and/or improve upon their handbell ringing skills.  Emphasis will be placed on learning proper handbell ringing technique, as well as the following key musical elements:  tempo, dynamics, time signature, key signature, meter, texture, duration and rhythm.  The students in this course will form an LHS handbell choir that will perform for chapel, area churches, concerts and the spring music tour. Students taking this course will be encouraged to continue playing handbells in college and in their church community throughout life.

Course Objectives


Students who successfully complete the course will . . . 

  • · Improve their ability to ring handbells

    · Increase their knowledge of handbell ringing techniques

    · Improve their ability to read music

    · Increase their knowledge of music notation

    · Increase their knowledge of the following musical elements:  tempo, dynamics, time signature, key signature, texture, duration and rhythm

    · Expand their music listening skills

    · Increase their confidence in performing in front of an audience

    · Appreciate their God-given musical talent and the talents of others

Outcomes

 

Students will . . .

  • · Sight-read Level 1-3 music

    · Play Level 3-5 music

    · Perform at chapel, area churches, concerts and on music tour

Grading

 

 

Observed application of handbell techniques & musical elements at   performances & during class – 75%

Written tests – 15%

Attendance at warm-ups prior to performances – 10%

Etc.

 

 *There are no materials required for this course.

*Students are not allowed to use cell phones during class. Cell phones should be left in the student’s locker or backpack. Cell phones used during class may be confiscated and given to the office.

Attendance at performances will be MANDATORY due to the nature of the handbell choir.
